Here’s one of the biggest misconceptions in homebrewing:
You need expensive equipment to make really good beer.
You don’t.
Now, I’m not saying expensive brewing equipment is useless. I’ve owned plenty of it. I’ve brewed commercially, used multi-vessel systems, and today I love brewing on an electric all-in-one system.
Good equipment can make brewing easier.
It can make your process more convenient.
It can improve consistency.
And, let’s be honest, brewing equipment is fun as hell to buy.
But none of that means you need an expensive setup to make great beer.
If you’re a beginner looking at three-vessel systems, pumps, stainless fermenters, glycol chillers and thousands of dollars worth of equipment thinking, “I guess that’s what I need to make good beer,” slow down.
Learn to make beer first.
Then decide how fancy you want to get.

The Biggest Equipment Myth in Homebrewing
Homebrewing has an equipment problem.
Not because the equipment is bad.
A lot of it is fantastic.
The problem is that beginners see experienced brewers using elaborate setups and naturally assume the equipment is what makes their beer better.
It isn’t.
A brewer with a basic setup who understands the brewing process can make better beer than somebody with thousands of dollars worth of equipment who doesn’t know what they’re doing.
The fundamentals still matter more:
- Good sanitation
- A solid recipe
- Proper mash temperatures
- Healthy yeast
- Fermentation temperature control
- Good brewing practices
- Patience
- Consistency
Those things make good beer.
The stainless steel makes your brewery look cool.
There’s a difference.

Start With the Simplest Brewing Method That Makes Sense
I’ve always recommended that beginners progress through brewing instead of trying to master everything on day one.
Start with beer kits.
Then try partial mash.
Then move into all-grain brewing if that’s where you want to go.
That progression lets you learn one part of the process at a time instead of trying to learn brewing, mashing, water chemistry, equipment operation and ten other things simultaneously.
But maybe you’re reading this and saying:
“Big Robb, screw that. I want to start all grain.”
Fair enough.
Then I’d seriously consider Brew in a Bag.
Brew in a Bag Is Proof You Don’t Need Fancy Equipment
Brew in a Bag—usually shortened to BIAB—is one of my favorite ways to introduce people to all-grain brewing.
I started all-grain brewing with BIAB myself.
And the concept is ridiculously simple.
Instead of using a traditional mash tun and separate brewing vessels, you mash your grain inside a large brewing bag placed directly in your kettle.
When the mash is finished, you lift the bag out.
That’s basically your grain separation system.
No separate mash tun.
No complicated three-vessel setup.
No collection of valves and hoses that makes your garage look like a small refinery.
Just a straightforward way to make all-grain beer.

What Equipment Do You Need for BIAB?
For the hot side of a basic BIAB setup, you really don’t need much:
- A brewing kettle large enough for your batch
- A properly sized brewing bag
- A heat source
- A thermometer
- A way to safely lift and drain the grain bag
You’ll still need your normal fermentation and packaging equipment afterward, of course.
But compare that with buying a complete three-vessel brewing system before you’ve even figured out whether you enjoy all-grain brewing.
That’s a huge difference in cost and complexity.

Can BIAB Make Beer as Good as Expensive Systems?
Absolutely.
The beer doesn’t know whether you mashed it in a $30 brewing bag or a shiny stainless mash tun.
What matters is what happens during the brewing process.
Did you hit a sensible mash temperature?
Did you get proper conversion?
Did you boil correctly?
Did you use good ingredients?
Did you pitch healthy yeast?
Did you control fermentation?
Did you keep everything clean and sanitized?
Get those things right and BIAB can make fantastic beer.
I’ve known excellent homebrewers who brewed on expensive multi-vessel systems.
I’ve also known excellent homebrewers who used BIAB.
Both made fantastic beer.
Both won competitions.
The brewer matters more than the price tag on the system.
**Start Simple**
If you’re putting together your first brewing setup, don’t buy equipment just because somebody convinced you that “serious brewers” need it.
Start with what you actually need.

What About Three-Vessel Brewing Systems?
Traditional three-vessel systems generally separate the brewing process between:
- A hot liquor tank
- A mash/lauter tun
- A boil kettle
They’re great systems.
They give brewers plenty of control and can be a lot of fun to operate.
But here’s the important part:
You don’t need one simply because you’ve moved to all-grain brewing.
That’s where beginners can get themselves into trouble.
They watch experienced homebrewers with elaborate systems and assume that’s the required next step.
It isn’t.
If you love the hobby and eventually decide you want a three-vessel setup, go for it.
Just don’t confuse want with need.
All-In-One Brewing Systems Are the Middle Ground I Love
These days, my personal preference for homebrewing is an electric all-in-one brewing system.
I’ve used systems like the Mash & Boil, and I currently brew with a BrewZilla.
All-in-one systems essentially take the basic BIAB idea and package it into a convenient electric brewing system.
Instead of a fabric bag, many use a removable malt pipe or grain basket.
You heat the water, mash, drain the grain, boil and often recirculate using the same main unit.
They’re convenient.
They’re compact.
They’re relatively affordable compared with larger multi-vessel setups.
And they make damn good beer.

Do You Need an All-In-One System?
Nope.
That’s the whole point of this article.
I love mine.
I’d buy one again.
But I wouldn’t tell a brand-new brewer:
“You need a BrewZilla to make good beer.”
That’s nonsense.
I would tell them:
“Learn to brew. If you love it and want to make brew day easier, then start looking at upgrades.”
That’s a completely different message.
** When You’re Ready to Upgrade**
Once you know you enjoy all-grain brewing, an electric all-in-one system can be a fantastic upgrade.
It combines several pieces of equipment into one unit and can simplify heating, mashing, boiling and recirculation.

Don’t upgrade because you think your beer won’t be good without it.
Upgrade because the equipment makes your brewing process better for you.
Don’t Forget the Brewer Who Bought Everything First
I’ve told this story before because it’s a perfect example of what I’m talking about.
A buddy of mine loved craft beer and wanted to get into brewing.
I told him to start simple.
He didn’t listen.
He jumped straight into buying a fairly expensive all-grain brewing setup.
And then he discovered something important:
He didn’t actually like brewing.
Now he’s got equipment he doesn’t want and has to sell it used for less than he paid.
That’s exactly why I tell beginners to slow down.
You don’t know whether you’re going to love this hobby until you actually do it.
Start inexpensive.
Learn.
Then spend money.
The brewing stores aren’t going anywhere.

What Brewing Equipment Actually Improves Your Beer?
This is where we need to separate equipment that makes brewing more convenient from equipment that can genuinely help improve beer quality.
A shiny kettle doesn’t automatically improve your beer.
But certain equipment can help you control important parts of the process.
Fermentation Temperature Control
If I had limited money and wanted to improve my beer, I’d put fermentation temperature control ahead of a lot of flashy brew-day equipment.
Yeast doesn’t care what your kettle cost.
It does care about the environment you give it.
Ferment too warm and some yeast strains can produce flavors you didn’t want.
Keep fermentation in an appropriate range and you give your yeast a much better chance of producing the beer you intended.

Accurate Measurements
A decent thermometer and hydrometer aren’t sexy.
But they’re useful.
Knowing your mash temperature matters.
Knowing your original and final gravity helps you understand fermentation and calculate alcohol content.
Again, we’re talking inexpensive tools that give you useful information—not thousands of dollars worth of stainless steel.
Cleaning and Sanitation Equipment
Want another cheap investment that matters more than an expensive brewing system?
Cleaning and sanitation.
You can brew fantastic wort on the fanciest system in the world and still ruin it afterward through poor sanitation.
Spend your money where it actually protects the beer. Learn how to sanitize your beer equipment the right way!
You Don’t Even Need an Expensive Wort Chiller
Here’s another place beginners think they need equipment immediately.
At the end of the boil, you need to get your wort ready for yeast.
An immersion chiller is great.
Counterflow chillers work.
Plate chillers work.
Even an ice bath can work for smaller batches.

But there’s another method I’ve used plenty of times:
What Is No-Chill Brewing?
No-chill brewing means you don’t actively chill the wort immediately after the boil.
Instead, the hot wort is transferred into a sanitary, heat-rated container specifically suitable for very hot wort, sealed according to the no-chill process, and allowed to cool naturally.
By the next day, once the wort has reached an appropriate yeast-pitching temperature, you transfer or ferment as appropriate and pitch your yeast.
I’ve used the method many times.
It’s simple.
It saves equipment.
And it can shorten the active portion of brew day.

Important: don’t pour near-boiling wort into some random plastic jug because it says “food grade.” Use a container specifically suitable for the temperatures involved and follow proper sanitation and handling practices.
Does No-Chill Brewing Affect Hop Bitterness?
This is worth understanding.
Your wort remains hot longer during no-chill brewing than it does when you rapidly chill it.
That means late hop additions can continue contributing bitterness while the wort remains hot.
If you’re brewing a hop-forward beer, you may need to adjust the timing of late additions to account for that extended hot period.
That’s not a reason to avoid no-chill.
It’s simply part of learning the process.
Once again:
Technique matters more than expensive equipment.
Where Should Beginners Actually Spend Their Money?
If you’ve got a limited homebrewing budget, I’d prioritize roughly like this:
- The basic equipment required for your chosen brewing method
- Good cleaning and sanitation supplies
- Reliable temperature measurement
- A hydrometer
- Fermentation temperature control
- Quality ingredients
- Packaging equipment
- Convenience upgrades later
Notice what isn’t at the top?
A massive brewing system.
You can always buy one later.
Cheap Equipment Doesn’t Mean Cutting Corners
This is important.
When I tell you to keep things simple, I’m not telling you to be cheap about safety or sanitation.
Don’t use equipment that isn’t suitable for brewing.
Don’t use containers that aren’t designed for the temperatures or pressures they’ll encounter.
Don’t rig something dangerous because you’re trying to save twenty bucks.
Simple and inexpensive is good.
Unsafe is stupid.
There’s a difference.
Learn the Process Before You Upgrade the Process
This might be the biggest advantage of starting simple.
When your system is basic, you learn what every step actually does.
You learn what happens during the mash.
You learn why temperatures matter.
You learn how much wort you lose during the boil.
You learn your efficiency.
You learn fermentation.
Then when you eventually buy better equipment, you understand why that equipment helps you.
That’s far better than buying an automated system and pushing buttons without understanding what’s happening inside it.

Expensive Equipment Usually Buys Convenience, Not Magic
This is probably the simplest way I can explain the whole argument.
More expensive brewing equipment can give you:
- Better temperature control
- Easier recirculation
- Faster heating
- Easier transfers
- Better repeatability
- Less lifting
- More automation
- A cleaner setup
- Shorter or easier brew days
Those are legitimate benefits.
I’m not against any of them.
Hell, I enjoy them myself.
But none of those things automatically turns mediocre brewing into great beer.
That’s the misconception I want beginners to get away from.
When Should You Upgrade Your Homebrewing Equipment?
Upgrade when you’ve brewed enough to know what problem you’re trying to solve.
That’s my rule.
Maybe you’re tired of heating water with propane.
An electric system might solve that.
Maybe maintaining fermentation temperature is difficult.
Build or buy fermentation temperature control.
Maybe lifting a wet grain bag sucks.
An all-in-one system with a malt pipe may help.
Maybe you’re sick of bottling.
Start kegging.
Now you’re buying equipment with a purpose.
That’s much smarter than buying an expensive setup because somebody on YouTube had one.

Is no-chill brewing safe?
It can be when performed correctly with appropriate sanitation and equipment designed for the temperatures involved.
Do not assume every plastic food container is suitable for near-boiling wort.
Should a beginner start with all-grain brewing?
You can, but you don’t have to.
I generally recommend learning through beer kits, then partial mash, and eventually all grain because each step teaches you more without dumping everything on you at once.
If you’re determined to start all grain, BIAB is a straightforward option.
Will better brewing equipment make my beer better?

Start simple.

And then, if you love the hobby and want the fancy equipment, go nuts.
I did.
But by then you’ll actually know what you’re buying and why you’re buying it.
A simple BIAB setup in the hands of somebody who understands brewing can make fantastic beer.
A $3,000 system doesn’t make somebody a better brewer just because they own it.
Learn to brew first. Upgrade second.
